European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
