Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to contest particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
